Distillery offers local, unique gifts for adults
PRESCOTT - This is the first Christmas in which Prescottonians can give hard liquor from their own hometown to friends and family.
The Thumb Butte Distillery opened this year and it's one of the few distilleries in Arizona. And it's Prescott's first legal distillery since prohibition ended in 1933, according to the local proprietors.
Named for the prominent mountain peak west of the city, the distillery creates whiskey, gin, vodka and rum on site.
The distillery also has added a line of bitters to spice up drinks.
"We have eight different bitters that make great stocking stuffers," co-owner Dana Murdock said.
Special Christmas concoctions include spiced dark rum infused with fresh pears and apples, a limited edition of the Central Highlands single malt whiskey, prickly pear grapefruit vodka, and a limited edition of lemongrass vodka.
"It makes a great martini," Murdock said of the lemongrass vodka.
The distillery also has stocked up on its regular offerings of Bloody Basin Bourbon, Rodeo Rye Whiskey, Gurley Street Gin, Western Sage Gin, Meyer Lemon Vodka, Hot Potato Vodka, straight vodka, and Escalante Dark Rum.
"Our rye has become our best seller, and it's really exceptional," Murdock said.
The distillery has gift wrapping available, and it also sells flasks, shot glasses and tumblers featuring its name and logo.
"People can do all their Christmas shopping and drink while they're shopping," Murdock noted.
The distillery hours are 11 to 4 Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 11 to 6 on Thursdays through Saturdays. For holiday shoppers, the distillery also will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, and Sunday, Dec. 21.
Hours are extended to 9 p.m. today for the monthly 4th Friday Art Walk. Musicians Jo Berger and Walt Mendelssohn will perform jazzy blues, and local artworks under $200 will be on display for purchase.
The distillery is located at 400 N. Washington Ave. in Prescott. Call 928-443-8498 for information.
