Embry-Riddle seeking 2 conference soccer titles
Both Embry-Riddle soccer teams find themselves one win from the national tournament.
With the Cal-Pac Conference Tournament opening its men's and women's Final Four rounds Thursday in California, both Eagles' sides came up winners in the semifinals and can punch their respective tickets to nationals on Saturday.
The women are on a particularly hot streak at the moment.
Riddle edged UC-Merced 1-0 in Atherton, California, on Thursday to clinch a spot in Saturday's title game. They'll meet Menlo, on Menlo's home field, for a 5 p.m. kickoff with the winner advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama, starting Nov. 22.
Menlo advances after a dandy on the other side of the bracket Thursday. They and Marymount battled to a 0-0 tie through two overtimes before Menlo won on a 5-4 shootout.
Under seventh-year head coach Todd Poitras, the Embry-Riddle women (10-8-1) are unbeaten in eight of their past nine matches, and improved to 8-1-1 in October and November combined.
The men will also play for the Cal-Pac Conference Championship.
The Eagles on Thursday knocked off Menlo by a 2-1 final on the Marymount campus field in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
As the 2-seed, ERAU will meet 1-seed Marymount in Saturday's conference finale at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing to nationals in Delray Beach, Florida, beginning Nov. 22.
Marymount advanced via its 5-1 thrashing of UC-Merced in Thursday's other semifinal.
Under second-year head coach Adam Pearce, the Eagles are now 13-4-1 on the season.
