First Science Olympiads compete in bridges, disease, wheeled vehicles, experimental design, others

Mountain View Elementary School and Glassford Hill Middle School, the two STEAM schools in the Humboldt Unified School District, co-hosted the kick-off invitational tournament for Arizona Science Olympiad Division B on Saturday, Oct. 18.

The two host schools were joined by students from Liberty Traditional School and Copper Canyon Academy from Peoria.

Students from the four schools competed in seven events:

• Bridge Building

• Disease Detectives

• Experimental Design

• Picture This

• Solar System

• Wheeled Vehicle

• Write It Do It

With such a small tournament, all students who participated were recognized and celebrated. Students earning first through tenth place received ribbons for each event. 

The top three winners in each event are listed below.

Bridge Building sponsored by Raytheon Engineering out of Tucson, event supervisor Raytheon engineer Chuck Stachovic: 1st - Copper Canyon Academy: David and Ariel. 2nd - CCA: Christina and Faith. 3rd - Glassford Hill Middle School Emiliano and Anna Namanny.

Disease Detectives proctored by high school student volunteers from BMHS: 1st - GHMS Leigha Campbell and Parker Dodson. 2nd - Liberty Traditional School Derek Elsholz and Alex Cyr. 3rd - CCA Levi and Ethan.

Experimental Design supervisors were GHMS art teacher Kathy Davis and GHMS Principal Terri Matteson: 1st - GHMS Emiliano and Dja Azevedo. 2nd - GHMS Leigha Campbell and Parker Dodson. 3rd - GHMS Hannah Trisdale, Anna Namanny and Jazmyne Routh.

Picture This supervisor were MVES teachers, Kim Grant and Andrea Misemer: 1st - LTS Damian **, Zion Padilla-Melton and Logan Brannon. 2nd - GHMS Leigha Campbell and Parker Dodson. 3rd - CCA Ethan and Levi.

Solar System supervisor was BMMS science teacher Gail Pereira: 1st - LTS Josh Grant and Derek Elsholz. 2nd - GHMS Rene Anthony and Angelique Townsend. 3rd - CCA Christina and Ben.

Wheeled Vehicle supervisor was GHMS science teacher Tim Derickson: 1st - GHMS Sam ** and Chris **. 2nd - GHMS Tim ** and Carson. 3rd - LTS Jacob ** and Connor**.

Write It Do It supervisor was GHMS language arts teacher Jessica Marks: 1st - GHMS Carson and Emiliano. 2nd - GHMS Angelique Townsend and Rene Anthony. 3rd - CCA Faith and Christina.

Kyle Lonon and Mark Feeney coached the sixth-grade team from MVES. The LTS team was coached by Rosa Marie Corradi. Sarah Straus and Tim Derickson coached the GHMS team. Parent volunteers from both GHMS and MVES sold concessions and pizza for the participants.

The schools compete again at a tournament in Surprise on Nov. 22. All three schools will travel together.
