Chino Valley cross country team runs its season finale
The Chino Valley Cross Country team completed its season by racing in Holbrook at the Division 3, Section I race Friday afternoon.
McKenzie Nez led the Cougars by placing 48th with a time of 19:04.
"McKenzie had an off day today and didn't reach his goal to finish in the top 25 so that he could qualify for the state meet next weekend," Chino head coach Marc Metz said.
Uriel Saldana finished 76th (20:03), Daniel Shepherd finished in 85th (20:31), Scott Blakley (88th-20:45), Brenden Tupper (95th-21:19), David Gehman (106th-22:53), and Taylor Blakley (109th-23:33).
The boys placed 14th out of 17 teams with a score of 392. The top nine teams qualified for state.
The girls were led by McKeisha Nez, who finished in 62nd place with a time of 24:23. Becca Tupper finished 71st with a time 25:15. Cheyanne Penton (73rd-25:33), Hannah Sanders (76-25:37), Mya Pullins (82nd-26:12), Christina Ballard (95th-29:43), and Alaina Rowitsch (102nd-33:34) also clocked in for the Cougars.
The girls finished 13th out of 15 teams with 360 points.
"I feel bad for Cheyanne, who qualified for the state meet the past two seasons, and McKenzie, who qualified last year for state," Metz added. "I would have liked for them to make the state meet their senior years. They have meant a great deal to the program."
