Off the Shelf: This Star Won't Go Out," by Esther Grace Earl.
This book contains the writings and sketches of Esther Grace Earl, the brave young woman who inspired the main character in John Green's bestseller "The Fault in Our Stars," which was recently made into a movie. Hazel Grace Lancaster, the fictional character in Green's Young Adult novel battles thyroid cancer, the same disease that finally took Esther's life.
John Green's books, though considered Young Adult, are really meant for everyone. "The Fault in Our Stars," centers itself around two teens that meet in a support group for kids with cancer. His first novel, "Looking for Alaska," takes the reader into a boarding school and all the fun, pranks, and real life that accompany it. "An Abundance of Katherines" treks into the world of a wonderful young man who is a prodigy but not yet a genius. "Paper Towns" is a treasure hunt of sorts, the treasure being Margo Roth Spiegelman.
Each and every John Green novel is different in that they are an original story, but the same in that they make the reader feel as though they are a part of the story, that maybe the characters are people they could meet at school, at work, or at your Local Independent Bookstore (subtle plug for The Peregrine Book Company).
Green befriended Esther Earl before she passed away and learned that he was a major influence on her young life. He could not have been a better role model for her or any other teen or adult who loves a good read.
