Montana Bar-BQ opens its doors in Prescott Valley
When an ex-police officer goes from fighting crime to grilling swine, all sorts of good things can happen.
Mike Jeffrey and his wife Lynn recently opened their Montana Bar-BQ Co. on Valley Road and 12 years in the barbecue business adds the perfect seasoning to their award-winning menu.
"It's a great change. People used to run from me, now they run to me." Jeffrey said.
In January, the couple will audition for the television show, "BBQ Pitmasters."
Their resume of ribs has lauded much acclaim as the duo competed in hundreds of events in the U.S. including the local Arizona BBQ Festival, Holy Smoke Bar-B-Que Showdown and the Smokin' Good Time event at Tim's Toyota Center.
The Jeffreys began their barbecue circuit in Lewistown, Montana entering festivals and contests.
They have since racked up hundreds of ribbons, trophies, barbecue memberships, and a reputation for throwing down some seriously, delectable comfort food.
Even their son Jayden, now 12, can boast of being an accomplished grill master as he won first place for children's barbecues with his Montana Kabobs in two competitions at the age of seven: the Boats, Bands & BBQ in Pueblo, Colorado and the Best Dam Barbecue in Boulder City, Nevada.
"He knew his temperatures and how to handle food," Lynn Jeffrey said.
The family takes their barbecue on the road, catering to headliner events including the Country Music Awards.
"We fed Taylor Swift and her family two years ago in Las Vegas. She liked the kabobs and the ribs," Jeffrey said.
At another event in Montana, the couple fed Alice Cooper, who ordered nine steak sandwiches to eat on the road as he traveled back to his home in Scottsdale.
The most challenging aspect of the road trips and outdoor contests is, "the staying up all night and making sure the meats do not overcook."
"I believe our main claim to fame is when people ask us how we do it together. Well, man builds fire, woman cooks meat," Jeffrey said with a laugh.
The Jeffreys use only Grade A choice, fresh meat and local sourced fruits and vegetables to round out the hearty menu that offers such items as the non-carbo plate, Southern Comfort BBQ bacon-stuffed brisket, chokecherry chipotle chopped chicken, loaded tri-tip baked potato, homemade coleslaw and the three-state championship winning strawberry pie with oreo-Kahlua crust served with sliced oranges, topped with fresh whipped cream and a sprig of apple mint.
This summer, the family will not travel so much and instead focus on their local catering events including the upcoming Prescott Valley Days event next month.
Montana Bar-BQ Co. is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, located at 8930 E. Valley Road.
