Letter: Easy solution to wrong-way problem

EDITOR:

Lately there seems to be a rash of wrong way driver accidents on our freeways with deadly results. These have resulted in calls for new technology to warn other drivers so they can take evasive action. This is over-complicating the issue and putting the emphasis on the wrong drivers.

A system already exists to literally stop the wrong-way driver dead in his tracks. It has been in use for many years in places like parking garages. It's a simple mechanical device needing no new technology. It's a set of mechanical spikes that retract, causing no harm when a car crosses them in the correct direction, but which shreds the tires of a car crossing the wrong way. Placing these at any point across the most dangerous exit ramps where inattentive drivers can get confused (I'm giving these drivers too much credit) would be immediately beneficial.
