Chew on This: Pudge & Asti's Sports Grill is a Prescott hotspot
One hundred percent sports. That's the new slogan for Pudge & Asti's Sports Grill.
The sports grill carries all of the different sports packages including the PAC-12 and others. During football season, the locally owned grill plays host to a lively crowd of football fans. Pudge & Asti's hosts NFL Sundays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The sports grill also sponsors a number of local sporting events, from bowling, trivia and darts, to softball and basketball. Despite its location off the beaten path, at 721 N. 6th Street, there aren't many who don't know how to find it.
In 2011, the business was voted 11th-place finalist for ESPN's Best Sports Bar in North America. The sports grill offers 24 televisions, with a number of sporting events playing at any given time, as well as a selection of 24 draft beers.
"People go out of their way to find us," said Craig Denny, who owns the sports grill with his wife, Suzy. Denny is a fifth-generation Prescott resident.
"So many people have told me, for as long as it's been in town, that this place is like Cheers. Everybody is welcome. It's definitely a local establishment. You can come in here seven days a week and 90 percent of the people you see in here on a regular basis," Denny said.
While he now lives in Florida, former Prescott resident Bill Sullivan still finds time to visit the sports grill whenever he's in town.
"It's my favorite bar on the planet. They have great sports, great food and great beer," Sullivan said. Happy hour at Pudge & Asti's is from 4 to 6 p.m., with $2 16-ounce domestic drafts and $2.25 domestic bottles and cans.
Cook and bartender Kyle Fraser said customers often come back to visit again and again.
"It's like a clubhouse. Everyone loves hanging out here," Fraser said. "What I like about it is it's a really nice place to relax."
Denny said it's the patrons who make Pudge & Asti's a unique location in Prescott.
"There's local camaraderie. People come in on a daily basis. There's a lot of loyalty to this place. There's some who have been coming to us since the 1980s," he said. "We opened at this location in 1990. We originally opened in 1983."
Pudge & Asti's is named after a pair of dogs. Asti was an Australian shepherd, while Pudge was half Saint Bernard and half Rhodesian ridgeback, Denny said.
"They were my brother's dogs. He originally opened the establishment in 1983. I took over in between 1986 and 1987. He owns El Charro downtown now," Denny said.
Pudge & Asti's offers a full menu, ranging from appetizers and specialty salads to burgers and sandwiches. Specials on burgers, hand-pressed using fresh ground beef, and sandwiches are offered daily.
Their grilled hot wings are among the customer favorites, made with a special sauce, or made with barbecue, teriyaki and other choices. Another customer favorite is Kirk's Chainsaw, a toasted wheat bread sandwich made with cream cheese, onions, roast beef and pastrami. One of the more popular special burgers is The Stretcher, made with a 1/3-pound burger, Swiss cheese, a fried egg, bacon and Chipotle mayo.
Other menu items include appetizers, sandwiches and wraps, grill selections, salads and even pizza. Grill selections include the Suzy Burger, made with a 1/3-pound ground beef patty with a choice of toppings; the steak of the week, which is hand cut and grilled to order; the Raiders Chili Size, made with a ground beef patty served on an open-faced bun and smothered in chili, and more. Appetizers include the Cardinals chili, Steelers sticks, the Vikings sampler platter and more.
