Obituary: Norman Bruce Metteer

Norman Bruce Metteer passed away May 1, 2014, at the age of 89.

Bruce was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Creighton, Neb. Most of his childhood was spent in Tucson, Ariz. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves and served four years as an electronics technician mate, first class, until the end of World War II. He graduated with a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Arizona in 1951, worked for RCA in Camden, N.J., until 1954 and then moved to Phoenix and worked for Motorola for 34 years until retirement.

Bruce is preceded in death by his father and mother, Milton J. and Jenny McKinley Metteer; Betty Jayne Metteer, wife of 55 years; and niece Jenny Smith.

Bruce is survived by his wife of two years, Kathryn Rabey Metteer; sister Joan Fox of Tucson; daughters Debra Knight (David) of Elko, Nev., and Donna Metteer of Seattle, Wash.; stepdaughter Karyn Bates of Ventura, Calif.; stepson John F. Rabey of Phoenix; grandchildren Samuel Knight and Hannah Knight; and step-grandchildren Avonel Jones, and Van Jones.

Bruce was a member of IEEE; American Legion Post 44, Scottsdale; and Life Member of WW II VFW Post 720, Phoenix and Post 2350 Elko, Nev.; a longtime member of the Episcopal Church, attending St. Paul's Church, Phoenix; Christ Church of the Ascension, Paradise Valley; St. Paul's Church, Elko; and later he became a member of PVU Methodist Church, Paradise Valley.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Best Funeral Home, 509 E. Dunlap Ave., Phoenix.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on May 12, 2014, at PVU Methodist Church Chapel, 4455 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, Ariz., followed by burial at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Open Table Program of PVU Methodist Church, 4455 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253; Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E.
