Bagdad baseball team draws Pima in 1st round matchup

The Bagdad High School baseball team has had its share of runner-up honors at state. The Sultans would love to break through this spring.

The AIA released the Div. 4 state baseball tournament pairings on Thursday, and the Sultans snagged a 16-seed. They'll go up against 17-seed Pima in the first round this Saturday at the Goodyear Baseball Complex (Field #3) at 4 p.m.

Bagdad (14-10-1 overall) closed the regular season with a dominating 16-1 win over Valley Lutheran on Wednesday. Should the Sultans handle Pima in Round 1 of the playoffs, a daunting Round 2 date against 1-seed Desert Christian awaits on May 9.

The Bagdad program won its only baseball state championship to date back in 1964 when head coach Lawrence Aragon led the Sultans to the title in the then-Class 2A.

Along with that one title, the Bagdad program has enjoyed seven runner-up finishes in school history, the most recent coming in 2009 in the former Class 1A under current head coach Dalton Mills.
