Winning poster becomes mural
Winning essay and poster students at Glassford Hill Middle School enthusiastically support their school in terms of respect for teachers, clean campus and the types of classes offered.
In January, students entered a "Why iChoose GHMS" essay and poster contests for National School Choice Month. Seventh-grader Adilene Gonzalez, eighth-graders Joseph Beckering and Margaux Sarno won the essay contest, with Margaux winning the overall prize.
Dillon Jones, eighth grade, won the poster contest with his graphic design, which will become a mural at the entrance to the school.
Dillon, who also sings and plays rhythm guitar in a garage band, said he used different style of type for the lettering in his design: bubble letters for "iChoose," cursive for "poetry" and big, bold lettering for "drama." He said his ideas came from thinking about his adventure games and CD covers. He also won a $20 Walmart gift card.
After graduation, Dillon's goal is to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and join the Marines. He traveled to Washington, D.C., with the local Young Marines, and after seeing the Academy in Anapolis, he said that inspired him to work harder and bring up his grades. His parents met while they were in the Marine Corps, he added.
Adilene said she likes her school because the students are taught to respect the teachers, respect learning, and participate and have fun when working together.
In his essay, Joe said Glassford Hill is a safe, clean environment with a tough no-bullying policy. It is a school of pride, honor, learning and friendship.
The variety of sports and classes, including AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), helpful teachers and friendly classmates is the reason Margaux said she chooses Glassford Hill. She noticed how kind and helpful the teachers were when she visited the campus as a sixth-grader.
"In addition to the contest, our teachers selected two students who were true examples of students who believe in the Mission and Vision of GHMS," said Principal Theresa Matteson.
The teachers selected Luis Gonzales and Logan Poole for the consistent demonstration of promoting harmony and maturity. Matteson said the boys work with other students who are struggling with bullying and low self-esteem. They work one-on-one, talking to them about self-advocacy.
"No one asked them to do this, they are doing it on their own, at lunch time," she said.
