PRESCOTT, Arizona - Michael Kouvelas, general manager of the historic Hassayampa Inn in downtown, now has a new title: owner.

On Monday, the Corporacion de La Fonda announced the sale of the downtown landmark to Aris Ventures LLC. Kouvelas owns Aris Hospitality Management LLC and is principal for Aris Ventures. His love for the historic locale, Kouvelas said, led to the decision to purchase the site. Kouvelas officially took over March 3.

"The Hassayampa Inn has such a history and is such a pillar in the community. I always wanted to be a part of the Hassayampa Inn. When the opportunity came available, it clicked and it felt right," Kouvelas said. "The main reason is that I love the community and I love the team here."

Kouvelas said Hassayampa Inn employees would remain. No changes are planned under his ownership.

The Peacock Room, located in the Hassayampa, was renovated earlier this year and reopened to the public on Valentine's Day. Work on the remodel began in early January after the owners of the Inn discussed the project for about a year, Kouvelas said.

The Hassayampa Inn, including the Peacock Room and others, is known for lively events, such as live music on weekends and more. The room last underwent renovations in 1985.

"There are no changes planned, just upgrades that we're working on," he said. "We're going to be working on some signage and just maintaining the asset."

Kouvelas declined to discuss the terms of the sale.

Jennifer Kimball, board chair for the Corporacion de La Fonda, called the hotel a "beloved getaway" for many Prescott visitors.

"We are excited for Michael and for the future of this iconic property, as it is a dynamic hotel in an incredible location," Kimball said. "We are confident that Michael will continue to build on its success."

The full-service, 67-room art deco hotel was originally built in 1927. The inn is a member of the National Trust of Historic Hotels of America.
