Scout troop rescued from Camp Verde backcountry
CAMP VERDE - Five men who became stranded on a Boy Scout hiking trip Saturday evening were rescued by the Yavapai County Sheriff's Back Country Unit and the Department of Public Safety's Ranger helicopter Sunday morning, a YCSO spokesman said.
The YCSO was notified Saturday afternoon that a Boy Scout troop from Maricopa, consisting of four adults and eight teens, was late in returning, spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said. The group could not be reached by cell phone. A DPS helicopter located the group in the West Clear Creek area several miles off Bull Pen Road about 6 p.m., and all but five were able to walk out. They stayed overnight in the canyon and two walked out Sunday. One Casa Grande man had a history of heart trouble and was unable to hike out of the rugged terrain, D'Evelyn said. The remaining three were brought out Sunday morning as well.
The other man was airlifted to Verde Valley Medical Center.
