The Prescott Jazz Society kicks off its opening season at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at El Gato Azul, society founder Milt Cannon announced.

The evening is set to feature a performance by the Foster Oden Trio from the Phoenix area. The trio is comprised of Foster Oden on the piano and vocals, Raymond Carter on the stand up bass and vocals, and Bob McKeon on drums. Cannon will be accompanying the trio on saxophone.

"The Foster Oden Trio are the 'gentlemen of jazz'," Cannon said. "They were booked for a gig for society advisory board member Roger Lakner and I asked if they would come back to Prescott to do this engagement."

The group is set to perform songs written by jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Horace Silver, and Cannonball Adderly, Cannon said. As well as jazz favorites like "Invitation," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Easy Living," and others that are easily recognizable tunes.

In addition to good music, attendees can choose from El Gato Azul's full dinner menu and 60 tapas selections, owner Barry Barbe said.

Seating will be available on the restaurant's patio as well as inside the main dining room. Barbe recommends making reservations.

Barbe and Cannon have been working on bringing their food and music together for more than a year. "Having been a music performance major in college, I've always had an affinity for live gigs, especially the jazz genre." Barbe said. "While there are not that many venues available, there are some great musicians in Prescott as well the surrounding area."

The restaurant, 316 W. Goodwin St., offers live music by a variety of musicians every Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings, Barbe said.
