Calling all animal lovers: The signature animal welfare event of the year, the Yavapai Humane Society's Reigning Cats & Dogs Gala celebration, is fast approaching. This year's gala is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, at 5:30 p.m. at the Prescott Resort - and you're invited! The event features a fantastic selection of auction items, an exciting raffle, dinner, cocktails, dancing, and of course honoring the reason we're all coming together - the animals we love and the spirit of compassion that drives us.

The gala provides an opportunity for animal lovers from all across our community to gather and celebrate the life-saving work we do, which has earned us the status as one of the most humane communities in the nation. This is a tremendous accomplishment that could never have been achieved without your support.

Tickets are going fast, but it's not too late to buy yours online at or by calling 445-2666. Tickets are $100 each or you can purchase a table for 10 for just $900.

While waiting for the big event, you can start bidding on the many wonderful items available in the gala's Silent Auction at, and even track the bidding online right up to the day before the event. Even if you are unable to attend the gala, you can still make your influence for good felt by participating in the online auction. Let your friends and family know about the great opportunities they can bid on, too.

Another way to help the YHS cause is buying raffle tickets. Imagine winning a weekend to L'Auberge de Sedona, one of the Southwest's foremost retreats nestled on the banks of Oak Creek in Sedona's renowned Red Rock region. The resort features award-winning cuisine, wine bar, and newly renovated spa, and is just minutes away from the treasures of Sedona. Buy a raffle ticket, save a life, win a weekend of luxury. Raffle tickets can be purchased online, over the phone, or at any YHS point of service, including our animal shelters, the YHS Thrift Store and the YHS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

Only 2,000 raffle tickets will be sold.

The drawing will take place at the Reigning Cats & Dogs Gala. The winner need not be present to win. All the proceeds from all the gala activities will be used to fund YHS's many life-saving programs.

Of special interest this year, YHS is presenting its first annual Heart of Gold Award. Who will this year's recipient be? Here are some hints: candidates demonstrated the highest level of philanthropy through gifts of their time, talent and/or treasure. Their generous hearts exemplified the values and beliefs of Yavapai Humane Society with a deep and long-standing commitment to animal welfare. Heart of Gold award candidates have a demonstrated track record for giving of themselves unselfishly to others with volunteer acts of service and kindness beyond the call of duty. So, you'll want to be there when this year's winner is announced - it may be you.

We look forward to celebrating this year's Reigning Cats & Dogs Gala with hundreds of animal lovers and supporters from our community. Your generosity and support will help ensure YHS continues to fulfill its mission to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of pets in our community. Call 445-4666, ext. 20, if you have any questions regarding this very special event, its fantastic selection of online and live auction items, or its exciting raffle. We look forward to seeing you there.

Ed Boks is the executive director of the Yavapai Humane Society. He can be reached at or by calling 445-2666, ext. 21.
