John Joseph Buckley Sr.

John Joseph Buckley Sr., 88, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at home with his family at his side. John was born on Jan. 23, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Edwin F. and Angeline (Nadeau) Buckley.

John grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated from Dowling High School in 1944. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to Des Moines where he met the love of his life, Dorothy, whom he married on Aug. 20, 1949. John graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1950. He furthered his education by obtaining graduate certificates from Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and the American Institute of Banking.

Throughout his life, John was active in church and community organizations, including Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary clubs.

Survivors include daughters, Christine Gaudette (Paul) of Dracut, Mass., Kathleen Buckley of Flagstaff, Ariz., Maureen Miller (Bruce) of West Des Moines, Iowa, Angeline Buckley (Nick) of Sedona, Ariz.; son John Jr. (Patricia) of Sedona, Ariz.; sister Florence Duff of Evanston, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass took place on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at St. Germaine's Catholic Church in Prescott Valley, with Father Dan Vollmer officiating.

According to John's wishes, his body was donated to U of A School of Medicine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Catholic charity organization of your choice.
