Eugene Edwin Sturgis

Eugene Edwin Sturgis was born in Richmond, Ind., on Nov. 28, 1921. Gene passed away April 17, 2014, from complications due to Alzheimer's disease. He was 92 years old.

He married Virginia Katherine Fox in 1942. The next four years, he served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Hawaii during World War II while Virginia worked and volunteered at the USO in San Jose, Calif. He worked for many years in the insurance industry before retiring in 1997.

Gene was an avid golfer, and, at one time, considered going professional. He accumulated so many tournament trophies that he began donating them to junior golf associations. He moved from Whittier, Calif., in 1968 to Phoenix, Ariz. Gene was a member of the Bel Air Golf Club and, after retirement, spent many happy hours on the course. He had moved to Prescott Valley, Ariz., five years ago. He was no longer able to play golf due to physical impairments, but he loved to frequent garage sales. He enjoyed buying watches, repairing them and passing them out to friends and family. Gene and Virginia celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2012.

He is survived by his wife Virginia; his son Greg; his daughter Cindy Johnson; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
