WYGC to host all-day Mental Health First Aid program

In previous Counselor's Columns, readers have learned about West Yavapai Guidance Clinic's efforts to educate the community regarding the signs of suicide and where to get local help.

To date, 478 adults have attended a training. The feedback from those in attendance has been very good, with two of the most critical outcomes being that attendees felt more confident about what to look for and how to get a suicidal person help right here in the Prescott area.

There will be another opportunity to attend this free presentation, hosted by MATForce soon as part of their "Lunch 'N Learn," Thursday, Sept. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Yavapai County Administration Building on Fair Street in Prescott.

Did you know that approximately every 13.7 minutes, someone in the United States takes his or her life? Many people are touched by suicide, not just the person who is gone. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), 90 percent of people who die by suicide are suffering from one or more psychiatric disorders. Mental health disorders such as clinical depression and bipolar disorder are highly treatable, typically with both medications and therapy.

WYGC's suicide prevention/education efforts have revolved around making this approximately one-hour presentation to a wide array of groups. But there is another opportunity for education being offered. On Friday, Oct. 18, a "Mental Health First Aid" program will take place in Prescott Valley. This evidence-based program is an all-day commitment, but that longer time frame allows the presenters to take participants more in-depth regarding mental health issues, not just suicide prevention. If you are interested in attending this Mental Health First Aid workshop, pre-registration is required, and attendance will be first-come, first-served. The class is limited to 20 people. To sign up, call 445-5211, x3615, or email L.Norman@wygc.org. And, should your civic, social, church or service group be interested in hosting one of the briefer, free workshops/presentations, contact information is the same.
