Prescott boys, girls win handily in home opener
The Badgers' boys' and girls' cross country teams both cruised to victory in their 2013 season opener at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott.
Prescott High's boys registered 24 first-place points, easily outdistancing runner-up Peoria Sunrise Mountain (52 points; won tiebreaker over Glendale Apollo), third-place Apollo (52) and fourth-place Phoenix Washington (101).
Meanwhile, the PHS girls won with 26 points, followed by runner-up Sunrise Mountain (58 points), third-place Apollo (59), fourth-place Washington (98) and last-place Mingus Mountain Academy (140).
In the boys' race, among a field of 43 runners, the Badgers' team No. 1, Simon Paige, crossed the line first with a time of 17 minutes and 35 seconds.
Luke Arminio finished second in 19:10, while twin brothers Kye and Rhen Davis took fourth (19:26) and fifth (19:29), respectively. Freshman John McMahon was 12th (20:16).
For the girls' race, among a field of 46 runners, Prescott's team No. 1, Claren Fraher, won in 21:44. Jordan Twombly-Ellis finished second in 21:48, while freshman Katie Townsend was third in 22:15. Seniors Kim Reyes (9th, 24:39) and Jordyn Burks (11th, 25:28) also sparkled for PHS.
Next up, Prescott travels to Flagstaff for the annual Peaks Invitational on Saturday.
