News Briefs: Week of November 20, 2013
Due to the holidays, the food programs will be as follows during November: Commodities will be Nov. 20 with produce on Nov. 22. December changes: Commodities, Dec. 18; produce, Dec. 20.
There will be two Memorial Services for Mary Yorgensen, who was director of Mayer Area Meals on Wheels. The first will be at 1 p.m., Nov. 21, at the Mayer Area Activity Center, 10051 Miami St., and the second is at Spring Valley Community Church, 13955 S. Spring Lane, at 2 p.m., Dec. 3.
Dec. 7 is the Cordes Lakes Annual Bazaar. It is a great time to get that one-of-a-kind gift for that special person for Christmas, as well as shopping for others on your list. Door opens at 9 a.m.
Dec. 7 also is the Baked Potato Dinner from noon to 6 p.m. at the Cordes Kitchen. This is a baked potato with as many trimmings as you want to put on it for $6.
Electric Lights Parade and Cookies with Santa will be at the Community Center on Dec. 21. The parade starts at 6 p.m. and will end at the Community Center at 7 p.m., and cookies with Santa will start.
Saturday, Nov. 23, Mayer Area Meals on Wheels conducts its first Hammer Out Hunger event. The day includes a Family Fun Fest from noon to 3 p.m. at the Activity Center.
Annual Thanksgiving dinner of turkey with all the trimmings at the Mayer Area Activity Center at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27. The annual Pie Auction follows. To donate a pie, call 928-632-7511.
Springs Church, with the addition this year of Mayer Community Church and Mayer 1st Southern Baptist Church, will offer their 7th annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner, from 5-6:30 p.m., Nov. 26, at Mayer High School. December 8 is the Christmas Brunch at the Mayer Area Activity Center from noon to 1:30 p.m. There will be food, fun, prizes and raffles.
Jerry and Robbin Schultz and the Highway 69 Chamber of Commerce invite all to attend the 6th annual Christmas Cookie Party, from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, at Bensch Ranch Clubhouse, (across from the Mayer Fire Station on Highway 69).
Those attending should bring a batch of their favorite Christmas cookies to share and another to donate to Mayer Meals on Wheels.
Sing along with Trish Rasmussen as she plays Christmas carols on the piano, sip hot buttered rum or hot apple cider and nibble cookies while visiting with your neighbors and watching for a possible appearance from Santa. For more information, call 928-308-0259.
Mayer Elementary School presents its annual Christmas Concert in the gym at 6 p.m. Dec. 18.
December 20 is the annual Christmas Dinner at the MAAC starting at 11:30 a.m. It will be served and includes a visit from Santa Claus.

TOPS summer hours are 8:15 a.m. for weigh-in and 8:30 for meeting on Fridays.

Big Bug Charity Quilters meet every Monday at the Mayer Senior Center from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Breakfast cooked to order is available from 7- 10 a.m. the third Saturday of each month. The menu features the "full plate" for only $5. There are eight separate choices, as well as a la carte item
Cordes Lakes Brush Yard is open. Hours are from 7a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of the month.

Carpenter's Pantry Food Bank is located at 10051 South 2nd Street in Mayer. Fresh produce is scheduled for every Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. It will be open on the last Saturday of the month from 9 - 10 a.m. The program is sponsored by Springs Church and is free for those living in the Highway 69 corridor.
