AIA state football tournament: Bradshaw's in, Prescott's out
One team's in, one's out.
With the high school football season wrapping up Friday night, players, coaches and fans from contending programs learned this morning when the AIA released its official rankings and tournament brackets which teams would be heading to the state tournament and which would be staying home.
The Bradshaw Mountain Bears (7-3 overall), the Division 3 Section 4 winners, are slated at No. 12 in the latest AIA rankings and as a result will open the tournament next Friday on the road at 5-seed Peoria. The game starts at 7 p.m., and the winner advances to the Nov. 15 quarterfinals against the winner of 4-Queen Creek and 13-Cactus.
The Prescott Badgers, however, missed the cut and won't extend their season.
The Badgers (6-4), who lost to Mingus Union 27-3 in their finale Friday night, ended up at No. 18 on the final seedings list, which puts them on the outside looking in for the AIA Division 3 16-team state tournament.
Agua Fria, the 16-seed, grabbed the final playoff spot. Greenway finished at No. 17.
The only other Yavapai County football team in the state tournament mix are the Bagdad Sultans, who hammered Glendale Prep 61-18 Friday night in the Division 6 quarterfinals to reach the Final Four. Bagdad, a 3-seed looking for the first state title in program history, will battle in the semifinals on Nov. 9 against the winner of today's 2-seed Gilbert Christian and 7-seed Ray matchup.
