An almost unnoticed moment of honor at the Humboldt Cemetery
My wife and I want to thank the small group of men and women who quietly gathered at the Humboldt Cemetery at noon on Memorial Day to honor the fallen veterans that have been laid to rest there.
They arrived without fanfare and paid their respects in a most honorable way. We do not know who they were, but we watched from a distance as they replaced the existing tattered and torn U.S. Flag on the cemetery flag pole with a bright new flag.
From our vantage point it appeared they shared a few stories of the sacrifices made that allow us to live in freedom. They offered a prayer and shared embraces of fellowship and friendship. They then left, but their flag and the spirit they embodied remained.
Based on their attire we believe they were associated with a local chapter of the American Legion. Thank you so much for your service and your example.
