Gardeners give back Helpers needed to plant, grow crops to feed hungry
The Prescott Valley Community Garden announces that this year, St. Vincent de Paul will receive donated produce from the gardens. The organization hopes to have refrigeration by mid-July when the harvest is abundant. If not, Yavapai Food Bank will, once again, receive the fresh produce.
This last season, in the Garden's second year of operation, it donated 6,663 lbs. of organic produce to the Yavapai Food Bank and other groups.
The Garden also rents 4 ft. x 15 ft. plots to individuals for $40 per season. The rent helps pay for the water. Only five plots remain available.
For the month of May, the Garden will be the recipient of Horizon Dental Group's new patient exam fees. They have two locations, one on Florentine Road in Prescott Valley and the other on Butterfield Road in Chino Valley. Coupons are available from numerous sources, but new patients also can mention the PV Community Garden.
Upcoming free presentations from Master Gardeners include growing the best tomatoes in the county, proper delivery of water, common diseases and insects in a garden, and harvesting and storage of vegetables.
Volunteers also plan to offer fresh produce for purchase by the public on Saturdays from 9-11 a.m., mid-July through September. They offer organic produce grown from open-pollinated (heirloom) seeds harvested from the garden only one or two hours prior to sale. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags.
