Amy Owings, a senior at Prescott High School, recently won the Optimist Club of Yavapai County essay contest based on an Optimist International theme of "How Can I Help My Friends Realize Their Value."
Amy will be recognized at an Optimist Club meeting where she will present her winning essay to club members. She will also be awarded a pizza party for herself and 20 of her friends. In addition, the essay will be sent to the district level to be judged along with winners from 50 other Optimist Clubs in the Arizona district. A $2,500 college scholarship will be awarded for the top winner at the district level.
This is the first year the Optimist Club of Yavapai County has participated in the Optimist Essay Contest since being chartered in August of 2012. Other programs and service projects that the club is currently planning include distributing parenting books to low-income families and making pillowcases and IV covers for children with cancer.
