Soleri's spirit sure to permeate Arcosanti's Italian Night
Guests who enjoy Arcosanti's annual Italian Night this month certainly will miss Paolo Soleri serving pasta out of a wheelbarrow during the traditional dinner. Soleri passed away in April at age 93, but guests in their mind's eye are certain to see him fussing over just the right amount of water in the pasta, or proudly enjoying the night's after dinner concert in the Colly Soleri Music Center.
This year's Italian Night will again feature a 5-course Italian dinner served in the Arcosanti vaults with a view of the beautiful country surrounding the structure. The meal will include parmesan crisps, bruschetta, ciabatta, basil flavored extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar; Penne Pasta Primavera with pecorino slivers and fresh herbs; poached salmon with dill/mustard or mediterranean citrus sauce (vegetarian option: eggplant moussaka); mixed green salad with Paolo's dressing; red and green grapes; and coffee crunch or forest berry gelato from Cool Gelato in Scottsdale. Wine and beer will be available for purchase.
Every Italian Night features a top notch concert, and this year, guests will experience a multimedia musical and theatrical performance from soprano Jayne Casselman, pianist Lynne Haeseler, percussionist and composer Owen Davis, tenor Chris Eubank and graphic/projection artist Nathan Greene, with texts from Paolo Soleri; excerpts from the works of Goldoni, Pirandello, Scarlatti, and others; Gregorian chant, Italian opera, and Venetian masks; and social satire as well as improvisational instrumental work. The concert is appropriate for all ages.
Italian Night will be on Saturday, July 20, with dinner at 6 p.m. (guests may come at 5 p.m. for a tour of Arcosanti), and the concert/performance will take place at 7:30 p.m.
Tour, dinner and performance is $40, with performance only $20 ($10 students).
Additionally, the public is invited to attend two free Conversations on Creativity with these artists at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, July 17 and 18, at Arcosanti.
