Prescott High School alum vies for 'Miss America' title

Piper Stoeckel, a Prescott native and a goodwill ambassador for the state as "Miss Arizona," competes tonight for the Miss America title in a competition that will be broadcast from Las Vegas on the ABC television network.

The event begins at 7 p.m. Arizona time with "Pageant Confidential: The Road to the Miss America Pageant," and the pageant will air at 8 p.m.

Stoeckel advocates for abused children through the platform she announced at the Miss Arizona Pageant, "Break the Silence: Helping Child Abuse Victims Find Their Voice."

She is a 2008 graduate of Prescott High School, and plans to resume her studies in journalism at the University of Arizona after the pageant. She was the on-field reporter for UofA athletics during football season.

Stoeckel also advocates for children as a board member of the Southern Arizona Children's Advocacy Center.
