The Yavapai College Instrumental Department is striking up its bands with two concerts to herald the holiday season.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center, the Concert Band, directed by Gary Flowers, will open with "Jolly Old St. Nick" and "A Celebration of Christmas Carols." Following this, a trumpet choir will play "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," directed by Dr. Roy Breiling. He will continue the concert with Christmas medleys, presented by the Symphony Orchestra and the Symphonic Band. Included in this portion of the performance will be "The Bells of Christmas," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and a pops selection called "Christmas Rocks at the Pops."

A humorous version of "Jingle Bells," "A Celtic Carol" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" will round out the Christmas pieces.

Since Dec. 7 is Pearl Harbor Day, the Symphonic Band will play "Hands Across the Sea," by John Phillips Sousa, in honor of those lost on Dec. 7, 1941.

On Monday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. Breiling will direct the Big Band's holiday concert in the YC Performing Arts Center.

The performance will feature some jazz standards, as well as "Winter Wonderland" and a "Chili Pepper Christmas" played by the Roughriders Big Band.

The Trailblazers Big Band's selections will include "Girl Talk," by Neal Hefti, "The Queen Bee," by Sammy Nestico, and "The Beat Goes On," by Sonny Bono.

Tickets for both concerts are $7 and are available at the Performing Arts Center box office or by calling 776-2000 during regular business hours. Children under 14 are free.
