Labor Day Weekend fencing event starts Saturday in Prescott

Fencing fans take note - the Prescott Fall Classic takes place this weekend at the Prescott High School gymnasium.

Foil and Sabre fencers will compete starting around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning until all the final bouts are concluded late that afternoon. Those fencing Epee will compete on Sunday starting around 9:30 a.m. and will conclude with a team event in the late afternoon.

The local fencing club Salle d'Escrime of Prescott, with the help of a committee of fencing parents, will host the tournament, which anticipates about 100 fencers from all over Arizona and the Las Vegas area. The tournament is open to the public, and there is no admission fee.

Nationally rated fencers from the Prescott area include Ehren Falk, Andrew Senseney and Josh Bodine. Those seeking to be rated include Henry Villani, Eric Suarez, Casey Raisley, Donovan Ratajski, Breonah Semke, Braeden Waples, Lucas Bloomenstein Boos, Charlton Cornelius, Victoria Riley, plus father, 46, and son, 10, duo, Eric and Sterling Thogersen.

Fencing has grown in Prescott over the 20 years that Pat Waples has taught and coached the local club. She has also been an instructor this year at the Prescott YMCA summer program. The club meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. at the Dance Studio on Iron Springs Road.
