Two Bradshaw Mountain High School graduates who were high school sweethearts expecting their first baby are recovering from a horrific three-vehicle crash Saturday, April 6, near Poland Junction. They and their families expressed their appreciation for the overwhelming support of the community since the accident.
Steven Dutson, 24, and Devin Jones, 22, were traveling southbound on Highway 69 at about 1 p.m. when a northbound SUV driven by a Prescott man, for unknown reasons, traveled into the median and rolled into oncoming traffic, striking the couple's red Chevy sedan and a Spring Valley woman's Kia sedan.
Emergency personnel pronounced the Prescott man dead on the scene, and Dutson, Jones and the Spring Valley woman were flown by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix.
Devin's mother, Lisa Jones, said Devin tragically lost her baby, which she was to deliver in just days. She also sustained multiple internal injuries, a broken wrist and left hand, and a fractured left leg. She has undergone four surgeries and is facing a fifth this week.
There is a bit of good news, however, as her mom said doctors removed Devin's ventilator on Monday and she now is able to speak. She was to be moved out of intensive care on Tuesday.
Lisa said Steven suffered a broken leg and shattered kneecap and internal bruising and bleeding in the crash. He has been released from the hospital and was able to travel home Tuesday.
Despite reports from emergency personnel on the scene, Devin said she was wearing her seat belt the day of the crash. Steven said he thinks bystanders trying to help unbuckled the belt, causing police to think she was not wearing it.
"She was really good about that," her mother said.
Devin's parents were coming home from Costco on the day of the accident when they received the call about the crash. They have been living in the hospital and a hotel in Phoenix as Devin recovers. The family has a long road ahead until Devin is back on her feet.
"She'll be in the hospital at least through this weekend," Lisa said of Devin. "She has so many limb fractures, she can't go to rehab. She can't bear weight for three months. We'll bring her home and care for her."
Steven, a former Bradshaw football player who graduated in 2008, and Devin, a cheerleader who graduated in 2009, have been together for six years. Now, they are depending on their love and the care and support of family and friends to bring them through the aftermath of the devastating crash and loss of their baby.
From her hospital bed on Tuesday, Devin expressed her deep appreciation for the support of friends, family, and community.
"Thanks so much," she said. "I can't believe how many people care. It's amazing."
"It's a very hard time for our family. Devin just woke up yesterday, and she's trying to process everything," her mom said, "but the support has been overwhelming. It has really helped in her recovery."
An account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank to assist the families during Devin and Steven's recovery. Donate to the couple at any Wells Fargo branch under the name Matt Morrell for Steven Dutson and Devin Jones.
Additionally, a series of exercise classes will take place from 9 a.m. to late afternoon on Saturday, April 20, at Anytime Fitness in Prescott Valley, with donations to benefit the couple's medical needs.
