3 HUSD students' winning nutrition essays go to Michigan
To celebrate National School Breakfast Week on March 4-8, Humboldt Unified School District students wrote essays for the School Nutrition Association's "Who's Your Breakfast Star?" writing contest.
Three students' winning essays will move on to the School Nutrition Association in Michigan, where SNA will choose three national winners.
The winners' essays will be published in School Nutrition Magazine and the winners will receive special prize packs from SNA.
The three HUSD students - Clarisbeth Quinones, ninth-grader at BMHS; Mary Faith Cain, fifth-grader at Coyote Springs Elementary School; and Lesly Castillo, fifth-grader at Mountain View Elementary School - will receive a certificate of achievement at Tuesday's HUSD governing board meeting.
For the essay, students were asked to write about the person with whom they would choose to enjoy a school breakfast, and what nutritious school breakfast foods would they choose to share.
Clarisbeth said she wanted to have breakfast with her grandfather, who is important to her even though she has never met him.
"I have heard a lot of things about him and I would like to meet him one day. For the breakfast food, I chose scrambled eggs because they are healthy and have a lot of protein."
Lesly wants to have breakfast with the Mountain View "lunch ladies" because of the variety of healthy and delicious choices they prepare for breakfast and lunch.
"My school's lunch ladies are the best and I have no doubt about it," she wrote.
Mary would like to spend breakfast sharing an omelet and a banana with her dad. He's fun, and he drives back and forth to Phoenix for his job.
"My dad and I would talk about how school and work is," she said.
