Town Councilwoman Mary Mallory announced plans Thursday for the second Healing Field honoring the victims of Sept. 11, and hopes to display 3,000 flags on the Civic Center grounds.
Mallory, who helped organize the event for this past Sept. 11, said the 2012 ceremony featured 1,100 flags. Each flag contained biographical information on the victims of the terrorist attacks in 2001.
The Healing Field project has collected 1,900 flags and needs an additional 1,100, Mallory said.
Mallory said she first learned about the Healing Field after being invited to an event a few years ago in Tempe.
She said volunteers will place 3,000 flags on the Civic Center grounds Sept. 6 in advance of the Sept. 11 ceremony. She added the Central Yavapai Fire District is storing the flags.
Mallory circulated fliers with sponsorship agreements for buying the flags from the Colonial Flag Foundation in Sandy, Utah. Prices range from $20 for an individual flag to $5,000 for 250 flags.
