The Prescott YMCA is hoping to help prepare young children for school success through its participation in the Raising a Reader program.
Raising a Reader is a national nonprofit that offers local agencies an evidence-based early literacy and parent engagement program that has demonstrated it can improve the reading readiness skills of children from birth to age 5.
Through Raising a Reader, the Prescott YMCA will serve 60 children and their families. The Prescott YMCA preschool serves children 2 (non-diapered) to 5 years. This program is twofold in purpose: first to provide childcare while adults in the home are working, and second to provide an environment for learning. It is the goal of the director and staff that by the time these children leave preschool, they will have all the necessary skills to begin kindergarten. The staff adheres to the state requirements for kindergarten readiness and incorporates these standards into classrooms using High Reach Curriculum.
Children will learn numbers, shapes and colors, in a fun and interactive learning environment. The staff provides opportunities for crafts, songs, creative movement, games, swimming, gardening, gymnastics and occasional field trips.
The program is made possible by Yavapai College in partnership with First Things First.
