Roughrider soccer team alone in 1st place

The Chandler-Gilbert men's soccer team had a shot to tie Yavapai for first place in the ACCAC.

Fat chance.

With only three points separating the two teams in the standings entering their Saturday night match in Prescott Valley, No. 2-ranked Yavapai grabbed sole possession of the conference's top spot with a 3-0 win behind two goals and an assist from attacker Alex Harlley.

The freshman out of Rosamond, Calif., connected in the 35th minute to stake the Roughriders to a 1-0 halftime lead, and then hit again in the 73rd minute. His assist on Junior Albon Gbapou's goal four minutes before the final horn capped the scoring. The night featured a whopping 37 shots on goal from the Roughriders.

Defensively, the team notched its fifth shutout in six matches this season.

Yavapai (6-0-0) completes its three-game homestand when South Mountain visits Ken Lindley Field for an ACCAC tilt this Tuesday night at 6 p.m. South Mountain lost to Phoenix 1-0 on Saturday.
