The Hot Spot: They're sweet, they're nasty and they're five
They came (fashionably late), they performed, they absolutely kicked butt.
Yes, I'm talking about Sweet Nasty. They put on a phenomenal show at Lyzzard's Lounge last Saturday and I pity all of you who missed it. Especially since it's such a rare treat to actually see those guys perform. If you don't know who or what I'm talking about, allow me to enlighten you. Sweet Nasty is a local band comprising Anthony V. Fusco (vox, guitar), Johnny Low (vox, guitar), Anton Teschner (sax), Lorin McLain (also of Filabusta, bass), and Mike Kreidel (also of Filabusta, drums).
The show at Lyzzard's was the guys' five-year anniversary show and I just wish they'd play much more frequently. I would go see them every month, because they are that good. Alas, they don't perform very often, which makes it even more special when they do make an appearance.
Not to be outdone, The Drunken Lass played host to Funk Frequency, that amazing '70s/funk band that has taken Prescott by storm. Their name has quickly become a household word, and deservedly so. Approaching the Drunken Lass, I can barely hear the music and I immediately want to start dancing. Dancing in the street, indeed. I am glad that despite the loss of three venues, this town still manages to provide an outlet for our fantastic music scene and that we're able to experience outstanding live music every weekend.
I must reiterate that Lyzzard's Lounge has taken over the open mic night... so all of you aspiring (and established) musicians, fret not, for you can still get up in front of your peers and let 'er rip... every Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.
This weekend features a great lineup of live music. Hooligan's Pub hosts Struck Match, an acoustic duo from Phoenix, beginning at 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. The Drunken Lass showcases a variety of different metal bands both nights beginning at 9 p.m. If you're in the mood for oldies, Jersey Lilly's is the place to be. The great tunes (along with the general silliness) of Little Larry and the Drive will be sure to keep you on the dance floor both nights from 8 until midnight.
Lyzzards Lounge has a DJ Friday night; and on Saturday they open the stage to Chocolate Fountain (Funk Rock) starting at 9 p.m. The country band Lostin Austin will perform at Matts Saloon both nights from 9 p.m. on. The Raven Café starts both nights at 8 p.m., with Michael Shay and friends on Friday, and Robby Roberson on Saturday.
Updates: Coyote Joe's/Annie's Attic is supposedly still trying to be saved with a new possible re-open date sometime in January. Though doubtful, I do hope for it to come to fruition. It would be a shame to lose such a fantastic venue.
The Birdcage Saloon has applied for, and should receive, a new liquor license sometime this month. For those of you who don't know, the new location is a few doors down from the old location, right where Quiznos used to be.
Hope to see you all out and about this weekend... Ciao!!!
