Introducing the Fall 2 session at OLLI
Estimates vary, but there is no doubt that a large percentage of our Quad-City population is retirees.
Among the local resources available to these laid-back life and learning lovers is the Osher Lifetime Learning Institute (OLLI), located at the Yavapai College campus.
The Institute is administered by a small cadre of paid staff, but overall direction and course selection is done by OLLI members themselves and, supported with video material, the members handle the teaching as well.
It is no surprise to those living in this area that there are some interesting and informed people who chose to retire here. Many of these retirees find their way to the OLLI courses at YC. Some of them suggest a new course in their area of interest or expertise, and then volunteer to facilitate the course.
The Fall 2 session offers courses in art, history, science, philosophy as well as a variety of film classes and music selections from Gilbert & Sullivan to Great Orchestral Works. Field trips are planned as well.
Because of time restrictions, some people may not be able to attend a full session. To help accommodate those folks as well as include all OLLI members, a workshop called Munch and Learn is available throughout the 6-week session. It offers one-day seminars on a variety of topics. An example of some of the topics planned for Fall 2 are the works of Diego Rivera and his influence on international art, Archie Wood, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense of Strategic Forces discussing the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and Dr. Laura Kennedy's discussion on acupuncture.
We are now beginning our Fall 2 session. There is still time to enroll for some of the classes. Catalogues, explaining the content of each class are available at the OLLI office. Not an OLLI member? We are always willing to welcome new members. If you want to try OLLI first before becoming a full-fledged member, we offer a "Try Me" membership. Just contact the OLLI office and all your questions will be answered. Looking forward to seeing you at the Fall 2 session.
