Wayne E. Lance

Wayne E. Lance, 98, left his earthly home on May 10, 2012, after a brief and unexpected illness. Born in Homeville, Ohio, to Vernon F. and Flossie Elizabeth (Wallington) Lance on Jan. 2, 1914, he was his father's 28th birthday present as they shared the same birthdate.

Wayne was a musician from an early age. A career in teaching music was his goal, but he ended up working in factories in Ohio. He had an avid interest in technology of any kind. He was a ham radio operator for many years under the call letters K7LRN. He loved to travel and see new places. In 1961, Wayne moved to Prescott with his wife, Allene, and two of his four children. In Prescott, Wayne played at Sunset Hills Restaurant, taught music, cleaned the Elks Theatre and more. At the age of 95, he was still entertaining at Cupper's Coffee Shop on the weekends. He was a church organist for several churches, including the First Congregational Church of Prescott.

Wayne is survived by daughters Margaret (Ralph) Cheney of Elyria, Ohio, Gloria Hatcher Ogden of Prescott, Ariz., Janet (Joseph) Cosgrove of Lake Forest, Calif.; and son David Lance of Prescott, Ariz. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-granddaughters. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Mildred Coffman of Albuquerque, N.M., in 2009; his first wife, Allene, in 1999; a son-in-law, Bernard Hatcher, in 1971; and a grandson, Wesley Hatcher in 1977.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. June 16, 2012, at the First Congregational Church of Prescott. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Congregational Church of Prescott, 216 E. Gurley St., Prescott, AZ 86301.
