CASA for Teens: 'Andi'
A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer is needed for 13-year-old "Andi." Child Protective Services (CPS) removed the teen from her grandparents' care after she reported sexual abuse by the grandfather, who was sent to prison. Andi is currently in the care of CPS due to the grandmother's failure to protect her from abuse and ongoing mental health issues that could further affect her safety. Andi had previously been permanently removed from her mother's care due to a long history of substance abuse.
Among the CASA volunteer's responsibilities: monitoring Andi's ongoing progress in her foster home; working with her therapist, physicians and teachers, to keep abreast of her physical and mental health issues, particularly in light of the sexual abuse, as well as her education; working with CPS to determine whether the grandmother might be willing and able to undergo behavioral health treatment services and agree to a no-contact order with the grandfather when he is released from prison, so she could be able to resume care of her grandchild; working with CPS to determine whether other relatives might be available to provide guardianship for Andi and/or support the grandmother in her reunification efforts; attending monthly meetings with the grandmother, Andi and other team members involved in the case; and making recommendations to the judge as to the best long-term placement for this teen. CASA volunteers need to provide information to the court at report and review hearings throughout the life of a case.
