I seem to have been dancing in the rain a lot lately. This really doesn't bother me at all, especially when it involves me being at CoJoe's and The Mods performing on the patio stage. Which is exactly what happened last Friday. You just know it's a perfect evening when you're dancing for four hours straight and still want to continue after the band announces their last song.
I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Gary Ukura, drummer for the CheekTones, whose father passed away last week. For that reason the usual show on Saturday was cancelled and Six Feet graciously took over the stage to entertain the masses. Very well received they were, and dancing in the (admittedly intermittent) rain continued for another evening.
Jersy Lilly's was packed to the gills both nights as people crammed onto the dance floor, moving to the irresistible tunes of Little Larry and The Drive. All in all it was another busy weekend in town, with lots of great music, hours of dancing, and meeting new friends. And that's what it's all about.
Great news: Daniel, former booking agent for CoJoe's, has joined ranks with Lyzzards Lounge... which means we'll have another venue to see some of our favorite local bands as well as a slew of new. Starting out with a bang, Lyzzards Lounge will feature that hardest-working blues band, Road One South, beginning at 9 p.m. I'm SO there. And I hope you all will be too.
Looking at this weekend's calendar makes me seriously want to clone myself so that I can be everywhere at once and enjoy every one of these fantastic musical adventures. Alas, I'll have to settle for a little bit of time with each. Which means all of you should send me some of your favorite weekend reports and regale me with stories of the bands you go out to see. I strongly encourage you all to take a few minutes to let me know which local musicians you fancy and why.
I know this weekend will be jam-packed with some of my faves. Friday night will see that wonderfully quirky band Fish Out of Water at CoJoe's from 8 p.m. on. "An eclectic mix of folk, acoustic and tales of murder and love," is how they describe their musical antics, and I absolutely love them. If those funky tunes from the 70s and early 80s are more your style, fret not. Just head over to the Drunken Lass on Friday at 9 p.m. and you can get your groove on with that fantastic new band, Funk Frequency.
Saturday at CoJoe's means our favorite comfort band, The CheekTones, will be back and keeping our feet stuck to the dance floor starting at 8 p.m. Totally looking forward to that. Jersey Lilly's features Llory McDonald and Combo Deluxe on both nights at 8 p.m.
And if that's not enough great music and plenty of dancing for you folks, there's always Sunday afternoon. There's a (semi) new band in town... The Jukes. Formerly known as Rhythm Guild, the guys have re-vamped their playlist and made a few changes, and are now ready for you to experience the result at the Drunken Lass Sunday at 3 p.m.
There you are. Come join me, dance with me in the rain or sunshine. Let's have some fun!
