Prescott Valley Thai restaurant caters to both mild and wild palates
Toi's Thai Kitchen offers a cozy dining experience. However, a majority of its customers prefer takeout.
Restaurant manager Vicki Roeder, who has been on the job for about seven months, estimated takeout accounts for as much as 70 percent of the business. Roeder believes proximity to the subdivisions off Viewpoint Drive contributes to the high takeout rate.
Dine-in customers include teachers and businesspeople. Toi's has seating indoors for about 25 people and two benches outside.
The restaurant is named for owner Ariyaphorn "Toi" Fehlman, who has worked in restaurants in the tri-city area and dreamed about opening her own.
Toi's has 68 menu items, including appetizers, desserts and beverages. All entrees come with jasmine rice and a choice of chicken, beef or pork.
Three lunch items begin with the word "pad." Roeder explained pad Thai is stir-fried rice noodles with eggs, bean sprouts and crushed peanuts in a sauce.
Toi's also has a "heat scale" of 1 to 5, with 5 being the spiciest, Roeder said.
Spiciness is a factor with the variety of curry on the menu, Roeder said.
"Every curry has its own herb," she said. "Some are hotter herbs."
She said the cook can add roasted chiles to the liking of customers.
The cook, Jeab Thaweerattanadit, said yellow curry is mild while red and green curry is hot.
The food appealed to the tastebuds of Phal O'Hara, a native of Cambodia who had lunch this past week at Toi's with her husband, Bill.
"I like Asian food," she said, while eating her plate of Panang curry. She described Cambodian food as being similar but not as sweet.
Toi's Thai Kitchen is located at 7545 E. Addis Ave. and is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Toi's is closed Mondays. For information, call 237-9099.
