Letter: Media outlets usually owned by 1 percenters

EDITOR:

As the election season heats up, we are bombarded with more and more references to the pernicious "liberal media" and how terribly evil they are. This is a hot-button issue that gets a certain section of the electorate salivating in hate. Actually, this is a false claim - in fact, it's ridiculous!

The owners who control the media are almost entirely wealthy persons, groups or corporations. Corporations and the rich are not generally known to support liberal policies; quite the opposite. Thus, media outlets are in reality mostly conservative, not liberal.

Insofar as journalists, commentators, editors, etc. are concerned, several of the very best are intelligent, educated, experienced and cosmopolitan, with a sense of history and an accumulation of some wisdom.

Some of these people are at times castigated as being elitists. To the extent that this elitism is synonymous with having some brains, I am OK with it.

I don't think that being intelligent should automatically bar one from competing for public office. Nor do I want to see Joe the Plumber or anyone of a similar ilk running and ruining my country.

So, when it comes to a choice between an elitist and an ignoramus, I go with elitist every time.
