Willadsen, Macias lead Roughriders to sweep of Glendale

The Yavapai College softball team swept a doubleheader against Glendale Community College 3-2 and 6-2 Saturday in Glendale.

The Roughriders improved their overall mark to 23-4 and 12-2 in ACCAC action. Glendale dropped to 3-15 overall and 2-12 in league play.

Mel Willadsen pitched a gem to earn the victory in the early contest, throwing a complete game. The Mesa native scattered five hits and struck out seven Gaucho batters.

Alma Cortez, Brandi Heimburg and Estela Pinon each had a run batted in and Alexis Lawton was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

In game two, freshman Kat Macias received the victory, pitching six innings with four hits, two runs and seven strikeouts.

Pinon got the final three outs for the save. Macias helped her cause from the plate with a home run, 2 RBIs and two runs scored. Cortez, Heimburg and Lawton each had two hits.

YC returns to the diamond Tuesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Game time is 2 p.m.

The softball team's home opener is Saturday, March 3, at Bill Vallely Field. YC plays South Mountain Community College at noon.
