YC baseball downs Glendale CC, plays home opener today
The Yavapai College baseball team seems to be finding its groove as of late.
The Roughriders (4-5 overall, 1-0 ACCAC) have won four of their last five games, including a trouncing of Glendale Community College 16-0 Friday afternoon in Glendale.
"It's just been getting the players experience because they are so young," said YC coach Sky Smeltzer, whose team started the season 0-4. "We also have some new leaders stepping up."
Freshman starting pitcher Matt Smith pitched a gem, going 7 innings while giving up two hits with one walk and five strikeouts to earn his second consecutive shutout win. Smith is now 2-1.
With the victory, head coach Sky Smeltzer is now six wins shy of his 600th career victory (594-299-4).
Yavapai scored in the first inning and was never challenged in the shortened 10-run rule game.
The Roughriders had 19 hits, six of them were for extra bases.
Austin O'Such went 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBIs.
Timothy Arakawa was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and a walk.
Former Prescott High catcher Humberto Aranda finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, while Jordan Negrini was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Yavapai returns to the diamond today for its home opener against Glendale. The first pitch will be at noon at Roughrider Park.
