The Hot Spot: Flash Molasses and more
So I totally hit the musical entertainment jackpot last weekend. There seriously was an overabundance of outstanding music to be found all over town for the whole weekend.
Friday night featured the fantastic band Flash Molasses at Coyote Joe's. Billing themselves as 'Northern Arizona's Newest Jam Band', these guys kicked some butt for sure. Comprising Rick Bowen (vox, guitar), Tony Campbell (percussion, vox), Gabriel Rhodes (drums, vox), Ray Sommer (bass), and Craig Niece (keys), this is one band that very competently runs the musical gamut from rock to jazz via blues. They have fun on that stage and it translates into a fun time for the audience. People were dancing and having a great time. Craig and Ray also play with another local band, Rhythm Guild.
Saturday was a busy night all along Whiskey Row. I honestly wanted to be everywhere at once so as to not miss out on anything. Little Larry Healy, along with Nick Canuel, delivered a fantastic, fun-filled show at Jersey Lilly's. As always, the dance floor was packed and people were having a blast. At Coyote Joe's, the CheekTones reminded us exactly why they have become one of our favorite local bands. People were valiantly braving the cold in order to dance to those funky tunes we have all come to love so much.
At Annie's Attic I saw a band that absolutely blew my mind. The Warsaw Poland Bros. originally hail from Flagstaff and currently reside in Yucca Valley, Calif. The name made me want to check them out; the music made me want to stay. The first song started out like an Irish jig, which quickly morphed into something more punkish, then gave way to pure reggae, all the while still maintaining a certain Celtic quality. It made me want to dance, to sing along, to jump with joy. Every one of their songs is a perfectly melded combination of different genres; each separately recognizable, yet all of them blended into something new and exciting.
Aaron Poland (vox, guitar), Dago (trombone), Stash (drums), and Andy (bass) certainly delivered one of the most unique sound combinations I have heard in a very long time. Instead of sounding awkward, their songs flow perfectly and are just great fun. I really can't wait to see them again.
On Sunday I attended a fundraiser for our very own Danny Romero at the Windsock Lounge. It was a perfect day with great food, awesome auction items donated by members of our wonderful community, and a band that's been around for some time but for me was another first, Latigo. Mike Stazenski (lead vox, guitar, fiddle), Joe Canuel (lead guitar, keys, vox), Rik Prince (bass, vox), and Bruce Mitchell (drums) make up a country band extraordinaire. Latigo has been around (with different lineups) since 1989, and they are absolutely awesome. Country music not being one of my favorite genres, I do hope to see them perform at Matt's Saloon some day soon, as I would be there to see them for sure
Well, there you have it. Another fun- and music-filled weekend in Prescott, AZ. You can find any one of these bands on Facebook, so check them out, listen to some of their songs, and 'like' them. This weekend features Road One South at Cojoe's and Sir Harrison at Annie's (both on Saturday). Hope to see you out and about. Ciao!
