PRESCOTT - A dump truck that rolled over when it lost a tire, crashed into another car and spilled a load of asphalt on the road forced the shutdown of Highway 89 in both directions between the Willow Lake Road roundabout and the 89/89A interchange for hours Thursday afternoon and evening.

The truck, driven by Joshua S. Hale, 38, of Chino Valley, was headed south on Highway 89 about noon when a left side tire came off and Hale lost control, a witness told Prescott Police. The Specialty Paving dump truck rolled and hit a small passenger car that was northbound, trapping the driver, Dennis E. Jackson, 45, of Chino Valley, inside, according to Prescott Police Lt. Ken Morley.

The wreck dumped asphalt across traffic lanes.

Morley said it took nearly an hour to extricate Jackson, who had serious injuries to his legs and was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center in stable condition.

Hale was airlifted to John C. Lincoln Medical Center North in Phoenix. He had multiple injuries but was also reported to be in stable condition, Morley said.
