A Chino Valley man died Saturday at a Phoenix hospital from injuries he received in a single-vehicle rollover at 12:42 a.m. on Highway 89 at Outer Loop Road.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Christopher Maldonado, 20, was driving his 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck north on Highway 89 approaching the roundabout at a high rate of speed when the truck struck a curb, became airborne, went through the center of the roundabout and rolled over, said Sgt. Vince Schaan with the Chino Valley Police Department.
Maldonado, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected. Chino Valley Fire Department and Life Line Ambulance treated Maldonado; he was then flown by Native Air to a hospital in Phoenix for further treatment.
Maldonado died at the hospital due to the severity of his injuries, Schaan said.
The Chino Valley Police Department is awaiting autopsy results from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision, Schaan said.
