Man reportedly admits to lighting forklift on fire
After Charles Gordon Hughes, 40, of Prescott, reportedly implicated himself in a fire at a construction site and several broken windows early Tuesday morning, a Prescott police officer booked him into the Yavapai County jail on felony charges of one count of arson, two counts of burglary, and five counts of criminal damage.
At 1:54 a.m., officers answered a call about a fire at a construction site in the 900 block of East Gurley Street and found firefighters putting out a fire in a forklift, said Prescott Police Lt. Andy Reinhardt.
As the officer looked around the area, he saw several recent footprints from Converse sneakers and took photos of them.
Another officer found Hughes, with a cut on his hand, behind a motel in the 1300 block of East Gurley Street wearing Converse sneakers with a tread that matched the footprints at the construction site.
"Hughes told detectives he was drinking downtown and as he walked home he got upset with himself and broke several windows and lit the seat of the forklift on fire," Reinhardt said. "The fire caused an estimated $33,000 in damage to the forklift."
