Two women injured in a head-on collision in the 200 block of North Highway 89 in Chino Valley were flown by a Native Air medical helicopter to Flagstaff Medical Center 1:30 p.m. Thursday, said Chino Valley Fire Acting Battalion Chief Mathew Mayhall.

Both of the women had chest and abdomen trauma, and one also had a compound fracture to her ankle, Mayhall said.

"Due to the seriousness of the injuries, we are withholding the names of the drivers pending further investigation and notification of relatives," said Chino Valley Police Commander Mark Garcia.

A Toyota sedan heading south on North Highway 89 crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a northbound Volkswagen, Garcia said.

"The accident restricted (Highway) 89 for approximately 2.5 hours while investigators cleared up the scene," Garcia said. "At this time it is unknown as to why the southbound driver crossed over into the northbound lanes."
