Obituary: Thomas J. Oliver

Thomas James Oliver of Dewey, Ariz., died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at the Northern Arizona VA Hospital in Prescott. He was 72 years old.

Thomas was born in Tucson, Ariz., on Feb. 22, 1939, to Joseph A. and Dorothy M. (Thiel) Oliver. He attended Camelback High School in Phoenix and, after graduation, he served in the United States Air Force working as a navigator and attaining the rank of major. While in the Air Force, he served four tours in Vietnam. Thomas attended the University of Nebraska where he completed a bachelor's degree in general studies. After completing his graduate education and earning master's degrees in geology, geography, and computer science, Thomas embarked on a career as a professional geologist. His hobbies included soaring, photography and technology.

Thomas is survived by his sisters Patricia Kearney, Jo Ann Willis and Ruth Farrelly, as well as his brother Don Vogel. He was preceded in death by his wife of 10 years, Mary Carol Oliver.

Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements. Donations in Thomas' name may be made to the VA Hospice Unit, 500 N Highway 89, Prescott, AZ 86313.
