Back in Black: Pick your price for black animals in September at YHS

The color black is very rock and roll. Band members wear black leather jackets and sing songs like "Back in Black," "Paint it Black" and, of course, Led Zepplin's "Black Dog" and Janet Jackson's "Black Cat." The Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) knows that black animals rock, too! That's why adopters can pick their price on black dogs and cats all September.

Dogs may be colorblind, but their prospective adopters may not be, it seems. So difficult is it to adopt out black dogs, the industry refers to the challenge as "black dog syndrome." That is when a shelter has more black dogs than it can possibly adopt out. This is particularly unfair when black dogs possess amazing promise for being exceptional pets.

All animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and examined by a vet. Adoption fees only cover about 20 percent of the cost to prepare an animal for adoption. The rest is covered by donations from the public. Normally, adoption fees range from $35 to $120 depending on the age and type of the animal. But all this month, adopters name their price for any black pet.

YHS is open for adoptions every day except Tuesday. The shelter is located at 1625 Sundog Ranch Road. For more information on "Back in Black," visit www.yavapaihumane.org or call 445-2666. Black cats are also available at the YHS Cat Adoption Center at PetSmart on Highway 69.

Gerly is a 3-year-old Rottweiler mix. She is a good girl who gets along with most dogs. She would prefer living with an older dog and older kids, however.

Floyd is a 2-1/2-year-old, big, playful lab mix with a lot of love to give. He absolutely loves swimming! Ask to play with Floyd in the park at the Yavapai Humane Society and see the kind of Rock Star dog he can be!

Conner is 1-year-old handsome shepherd mix. He is a little unsure of people sometimes, but he loves and trusts those he has met. He would make a great companion for someone with the patience to slowly introduce him to their lifestyle.

Meadow is a beautiful shepherd/Rottweiler mix. She is polite, social, well-behaved, and has had some housetraining. What more could you ask for? If you want a great dog, check Meadow out at yavapaihumane.org.

Henry is a 10-year-old Labrador retriever. He may be older, but he can still play and keep up with the pups. Henry is looking for a good family to give him a nice place to stay and a few scratches behind the ear a day. Take a look at Henry's photos online at yavapaihumane.org!

Rufus is a 1-1/2-year-old smaller lab/terrier mix. He is a smart, energetic, young dog. Rufus loves to play and chase balls. With a confident owner to train him, Rufus would be the perfect dog!

Zod is a 1-year-old retreiver/terrier mix. He is a curious, friendly young dog looking for his forever home with a family and a yard.

Panda Bear is a 1-year-old, smaller pit bull/terrier mix. He is a sweet, shy boy with a good history with small children. Panda Bear didn't get along very well with his sister, so he may not get along with other dogs. Panda Bear is well-trained, and good-looking to boot!

Beethoven is a 1-1/2-year-old pit bull. Beethoven is a very well-behaved, well-trained dog. Beethoven loves everyone, is good with kids, and would be an excellent family dog. He is big and strong and so would need a strong, confident owner. He may be too big to play with young children.

Dash is a 5-year-old Labrador retriever. He is a good, playful family dog, although he needs to go to a home with older, well-behaved children. He would be most comfortable with a less active, friendly dog.

Dinkins is an 11-year-old black lab. Dinkins' owner passed away, leaving him searching for a new forever home. He is gentle, playful, and friendly with children and dogs. Dinkins is housetrained, and would play fetch all day if he could. Come to the Yavapai Humane Society to see how many tennis balls he can carry at once - it might surprise you!

Sassy is a 5-year-old shepherd mix. She is a sweet, smart girl. She would be a great family dog, although she doesn't like cats. Sassy is housetrained, and knows several commands. She is waiting at the Yavapai Humane Society with her friend Elvis to find her new forever home. Check out Sassy's pictures at yavapaihumane.org!

Elvis is a 4-year-old chow/Lab mix. He gets along great with his friend Sassy, but not every dog. He doesn't care for cats, either. Elvis does love children of all ages. Loud noises scare him, so he may not be the King of Rock you might think he is, but he will still be your best friend!

Sammi is a wonderful 7-year-old lab mix who is great with children. She knows many different commands, and she would never dream of using the bathroom inside the house. Sammi can be picky about her adult dog-friends, and should not live with cats. Otherwise, she's an all-around great dog.

Simon is a 3-year-old border collie mix. He is a nice, playful, social boy. He might not be well-suited for small children, and he prefers to dine alone. Simon would love an active forever home where he can get a lot of exercise.
