Evelyn Gwinn Edwards of Prescott passed from this Earth on Oct. 8, 2011, at the age of 79. She will live on in the hearts of the many people she has touched, inspired and loved through the years.

Evelyn was born in Detroit, Mich., and at an early age moved with her family to Hastings, Mich. She attended Albion College, Albion, Mich., from which she graduated with a degree in chemistry. After two years working at Upjohn Pharmaceutical in Kalamazoo, she married Ken, and they moved to Boulder, Colo., where he was a graduate student. She taught junior high school science for four years before changing to part-time work as a chemist along with raising their son and daughter. Evelyn and Ken lived in Lakewood, Colo., from 1961 to 1994. While there, she was active in the League of Women Voters and Planned Parenthood.

After Ken's retirement from the Colorado School of Mines, they moved to Prescott in 1994. Evelyn was active in the Prescott Nature Center (now Highlands Center of Natural History) and Sharlot Hall Museum. She loved working with children and served as both a tour guide and building host at the museum, and also worked in the archives. Since 2001, she was co-coordinator, with her husband, of downtown walking tours for the Prescott Chamber of Commerce.

Among Evelyn's many loves were history, travel, hiking, nature study and sewing.

She is survived by her husband Ken, to whom she was married for 55 wonderful years; by a son, Jeffrey, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Nancy, of Rockport, Texas; a granddaughter, Annaliese; a great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Charles and Ralph Gwinn. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to Sharlot Hall Museum, 415 W. Gurley St., Prescott, AZ 86301.

An informal gathering of Evelyn's friends and family to celebrate her life will be near the amphitheatre at Sharlot Hall Museum on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Hampton Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements.
